Benthic subtidal surveys

Benthic sampling is carried out in subtidal habitats to allow for the identification of the biological communities present and the classification of marine biotopes. This may be required in inshore waters or offshore. Particular requirements for marine benthic surveys arise where proposed projects are located within or may potentially affect designated marine conservation areas (i.e. Special Areas of Conservation or Special Protection Areas).

ECOFACT undertake benthic sampling surveys utilising specialist equipment which are deployed based on the sea bed conditions within the study area. The design and programming of marine benthic surveys can be carried out by the specialist ECOFACT team to meet client requirements.

Benthic marine surveys are frequently required for the following developments:

• Harbours, marinas and jettys
• Coastal and offshore wind and renewable energy developments
• Aquaculture licensing
• Dredging operations
• Waste water treatment plants and discharge licences
• Scientific surveys and monitoring

ECOFACT provide the following services in relation to benthic surveys:

• Underwater photographic and video surveys
• Sediment sampling utilising cores, dredging and grab samplers for a range of parameters including infaunal identification, particle size analysis, heavy metals and microbiological counts.
• ECOFACT staff have the taxonomic experience and laboratory facilities required to undertake a full range of marine fauna identification, processing and interpretation of results to contribute to ecological impact assessments and monitoring in the marine environment.
